What you need

Tins and packetsPaper coins

How to do it

  1. 1Set up five items on a low shelf with paper price tags: 1, 2, 3.
  2. 2Give them paper coins.
  3. 3Swap places and let them be the shopkeeper.

How it actually goes

The honest version โ€” including what "going well" looks like at this age.

โฑ 30-second set-up
Thirty seconds: put tins and packets, paper coins on a tray or a clear bit of floor, and sit down next to it before you call them over.
๐Ÿง‘ What you do
Show it once, slowly, without talking over yourself. Then hand it over and stop helping unless they ask.
๐Ÿ‘ถ What they do
Line things up, count out loud, and notice what's the same.
โœ… What success looks like
At 3โ€“4 they'll repeat it, narrate it, and want to change the rules. Let them change the rules.
๐Ÿงบ How to put it away
Everything back into one basket or tray, carried back to its spot by them. Naming the spot out loud is what makes it stick.
๐Ÿ“ˆ When they outgrow it
Older? Count it, then ask how many there'd be with one more.
