What you need

How to do it
- 1Collect leaves, stones, and sticks outdoors.
- 2Tip them onto a tray at home.
- 3Sort by colour, then by size, then by texture.
How it actually goes
The honest version — including what "going well" looks like at this age.
- ⏱ 30-second set-up
- On the walk: one bag. At home: tip the finds onto a tray and put out three bowls or three sheets of paper.
- 🧑 What you do
- Sort two or three pieces out loud — 'this one is rough, this one is smooth' — then leave it alone.
- 👶 What they do
- Decide the rule. It might be colour, size, or 'ones I like'.
- ✅ What success looks like
- At 2–3 they'll invent a rule you can't see and change it halfway. Ask them about it rather than correcting it.
- 🧺 How to put it away
- Nature goes back outside or in the bin together — it's part of the ritual.
- 📈 When they outgrow it
- At 4–5, count each pile and ask which has most before counting.
