Why this is good for your child

  • βœ“Carrying
  • βœ“Independence

What you need

BlanketTheir own plate and cupWhatever lunch already was

How to do it

  1. 1Spread a blanket somewhere you'd never normally eat.
  2. 2Let them carry their plate and cup over themselves.
  3. 3Eat on the floor and say nothing about crumbs.

How it actually goes

The honest version β€” including what "going well" looks like at this age.

⏱ 30-second set-up
Thirty seconds: put blanket, their own plate and cup, whatever lunch already was on a tray or a clear bit of floor, and sit down next to it before you call them over.
πŸ§‘ What you do
Show it once, slowly, without talking over yourself. Then hand it over and stop helping unless they ask.
πŸ‘Ά What they do
Do the real job, slowly, with their own hands β€” spills and all.
βœ… What success looks like
At 1–2 they'll tip it out and put nothing back. That's the work β€” emptying comes long before filling.
🧺 How to put it away
Everything back into one basket or tray, carried back to its spot by them. Naming the spot out loud is what makes it stick.
πŸ“ˆ When they outgrow it
Older? Hand over the whole job, start to finish, including the clean-up.
